Not car related, obviously. My GS3 is crapping the bed so I'm planning on going out and buying a new phone. Been putting it off because I'll be buying it unsubsidized so I can hold onto my unlimited data plan (otherwise the new plan on Verizon adds $50 per month...what nonsense!).
So I'm between the GS5 and HTC One (M8). Leaning towards the One because I find their hardware and build quality to be terrific in my prior phone and it lasted 4 years (two users in my family) whereas the Galaxy I have is cheap and slowly dying. I won't buy an iPhone and will not entertain discussions about why not :)
If anyone has one of these two phones above I would appreciate some feedback.

If you like plain Android, go with the Google Play edition of either. If you like Touchwiz (I do), go with the Galaxy S5, and if you like Sense, then get the M8. Either way, you can't go wrong.

What about Windows Phone? It's got nearly everything the others have, save for some OS-specific apps. But then, WP8 has those as well for Windows users.
The hardware is generally very well built, and even with the lower-end phones the OS runs very, very well and quickly.
If you're really an Android fan, that's fine, but don't rule out a different OS until you try it.

I've got a One m8 if you have any specific questions. Long time HTC user. Hardware is what I'd expect, very well put together. Can't recommend it if you're on Sprint (you didn't say which carrier) though. Their network is totally borked for all the new tri-band phones. I had to root and force roam to Verizon to get any semblance of consistent data.
Wife's a long time Samsung user. She's on the Note 2 now rather than Galaxy S line currently.

I've only used HTC, so I may be a bit biased. I got last year's model, the One M7, it's a great phone, but mine appears to have a camera defect on it which makes everything dark go purple.
Before this, I had the HTC Legend, which worked well, but was a slow performer.

Awesome! That's like Eleventy percent growth. I bet Apple is jealous of those numbers.

I have a GS5 and migrated from a GS3. In comparison, it's a good amount larger in size, but the screen quality is fantastic. The camera also works extremely well. Look at any of my pic posts from mid-April on ( here's a good example ), and you'll see some examples.
The only downside to the phone is I can no longer talk on the phone and use my mobile data at the same time. I am on Sprint, so I am not sure if this is the case for other providers, too.

The wife got her 900 first. Then she got incredibly pissed that my 920 was WinPho8 and her 900 couldn't upgrade like everyone at the store told her it would .
I think I'ma take her in and get her a 925, because she won't wait until November.

I consider all options but arrived at the two above after consideration. I have to use my personal phone for work as corporate introduced a BYOD policy. but to use our phone with work email (i have to) we need specific software that isnt supported on WP

Makes sense. Shame WP won't work, but I know how that is. WP doesn't work with any of the cars I teach people how to use. I had to have my dealer get me an iPhone so I could do my job. Ha ha.
At least you considered all possibilities. That's why I like it around here. People generally aren't so blinded by fanboisim they can't at least think of other possibilities. (Stance and Sticks excluded of course. )

I know a few people who have the HTC One and they really like it. Their batteries always seem to last a lot longer than mine...because iPhone.

I have had terrible luck with HTC devices breaking before a year is up. I had a 3 year old GSII that worked really well, so I bought an GS5. It is amazing. I especially like that it is water resistant.
If you are going to buy it outright, look at prepaid options (unless Verizon is the only good carrier in your area) For $45 a month I get unlimited talk and text, and 2.5 GB of 4g data before throttling, on the AT&T network by using cricket.

One of the most inconsistent things about my current phone is the battery. I run 4G all the time just because so that's a contributing factor however the battery life dropped substantially after just a year of use.

I own my family's plan and leaving it would be terribly expensive for me. The way I set it up with unlimited data and texting costs me $45. Can't beat that.
Verizon is the best in my area for coverage. I make trips to New Hampshire a few times a year and hope to do more this year...I'm the only one with Verizon and the only one with reception.
My HTC Incredible was a tank for over two years with me and then another two years with my aunt. The GS3 I have now started giving me issues after just a year. And the One is a gorgeous device.

My family has had HTC Incredibles that have lasted forever, the OG Evo, and the way old HTC hero. Then we bought the Evo 3D. IT had to be replaced every 3 months. We also had two HTC Ones (not the new ones, the one from 1.5 years ago) that also needed to be replaced every 3 months.
My mom had great luck with Motorola and LG devices. Maybe the LG G3. Nexus 5 is available for really cheap.
Also, google is widely expected to release the Android Silver program on June 25th. If you can, wait until then before you buy a new phone.
